CS vs CSL Style: How does it suit your build?

If you own a G87 M2 or G42, you might have seen lots of products mentioned in CS / CSL styles, it can be kinda confusing if you just got started to do modification for your build. This blog aims to help you on this issue, explain the difference between both style trunk lids.

Where the designs come from?

CS Style takes inspiration from the G87 M2 CS trunk lid. CSL Style references the M4 CSL, whose integrated ducktail follows the design heritage of the E46 M3 CSL. They share the idea of a ducktail built into the trunk panel, but each brings a different contour to your car.

What looks different?

On the two versions shown here, the upper surface is the easiest place to spot the difference. CS Style has a cleaner, more continuous surface, putting the focus on the carbon weave and ducktail outline. CSL Style adds two defined creases to the upper panel, creating more surface detail and variation in the reflections. A straight rear view shows the overall outline, while a higher angle reveals the top-surface details. From the side, you can see how each panel transitions into the raised ducktail.

What does an integrated ducktail do?

It changes the rear profile by combining the trunk lid and spoiler into one continuous form. BMW’s original M2 CS and M4 CSL designs also use their ducktails to improve rear aerodynamic balance. However, those factory results do not establish which aftermarket style produces more downforce on a G42 or G87. For these two lids, choose based on the appearance you prefer. Any weight reduction depends on the panel’s construction and actual weight, rather than the CS or CSL name.

How will it work with your build?

Look beyond the trunk lid itself. Consider how its shape works with your side skirts, rear diffuser and other exterior parts. Exposed gloss carbon complements darker paint and creates a stronger contrast against lighter colors. If you prefer a more unified look, either lid can be professionally painted to match the body, with selected carbon details left exposed.

Installation and daily use

Both styles replace the original trunk lid. During installation, check the gaps on both sides, alignment around the taillights, and whether the edges sit flush. Adjusting the lid’s position can improve some gaps; the latch and support mechanism also need to be checked. Once correctly installed, our lids open and stay supported normally. Because they are lighter than the original panel, closing feels different: guide the lid down by hand and apply gentle pressure to latch it securely.
